John Barkley Plaza at Shawnee Mission Park

Shawnee Mission, Kansas

Shawnee Mission Park is the flagship park of the award-winning Johnson County Park and Recreation District. PGAV was part of a multidisciplinary design team hired to reimagine the entrance to the 1,600-acre, multi-use park. Once home to the park’s visitor center and police station, the site was reconfigured to improve traffic flow into the park and provide gathering spaces, shade, and parking. In addition, the plaza serves as a memorial to the first superintendent of the park district, John Barkley. Care was taken to preserve and enhance the area’s existing landscape.
