Automatic Storage & Retrieval System

University of Missouri-Kansas City
Miller Nichols Library & Learning Center
Kansas City, Missouri

The construction of the Automatic Storage and Retrieval System (ASRS) at UMKC provides archival quality, climate controlled high-density storage for 800,000 volumes of the Library’s general and special collections. The high speed ASRS maintains rapid patron access to stored material and has allowed the Library to replace what was formerly stack space with a mix of technology enriched spaces for individual and group study, math tutoring, group presentation and team-based learning.

The limestone clad ASRS addition complements the existing Library and the architecture of the nearby campus quadrangle. The east and west facades of the ASRS display an abstract interpretation of “Rivers, Rails and Trails,” a historic map from the Library’s Special Collections.
