Hilltop Learning Center

Blue Valley School District
Overland Park, Kansas

The new Hilltop Learning Center is an adaptive reuse of a former mega church which transformed the abandoned building into a community asset. In 2011, the Blue Valley School District acquired the facility, which underwent a major interior renovation and two building additions to become its early childhood education center and professional development campus.

The facility now houses an advanced early childhood center with indoor and outdoor learning environments and a professional development center for teacher training and continuing education. The building exterior underwent minor modifications. Much of the interior was completely redesigned to include technology rich, flexible classrooms and a welcoming entrance lobby, designed to make first time families feel at home.

“Not a day goes by that someone doesn’t comment on some facet of the building and how it beautifully meets the needs of students, staff, families and community. From the very beginning with focus groups the PGAV staff took it upon themselves to invest in learning about our organization, our culture, the desires of the staff, and the needs of very young children and their families. Then they took the critical time necessary to thoroughly investigate the research and provide best practice design concepts and integrate them into the facility. And they didn’t stop there. Through each phase of the project the staff made a commitment to listening and learning from the ‘experts’ in our school community and respecting diverse opinions. They were open to new ideas and always willing to problem solve when questions or concerns arose. Our desire at project completion was to have a facility that screamed, “We get kids and families”, and through a team effort we got that right!”
