Docking kansas State Office Building
Topeka, Kansas
Hutton and PGAV led a design-build team to reconstruct the Docking State Office Building. The team executed a concept design developed by Clark Huesemann who served as bridging architect/owner’s technical consultant during the process. Prominently located adjacent to the Kansas State Capitol in Topeka, the three-story 165,000 GSF Docking Building was constructed directly above the 68,100 GSF capitol complex central plant.
Docking provides civic amenities including a public atrium with outstanding views to the Capitol Building and a welcome center for the capitol complex featuring static and interactive exhibits about the capitol and history of Docking; a conference, training and event space for 250-300 people; Class A offices for multiple state agencies; shared meeting and wellness facilities; and a public café. A landscaped civic plaza incorporating new and salvaged art supports public events seamlessly ties Docking into the capitol complex grounds with new walks and exhibits.
Sustainable design and energy conservation innovations include the region’s first major installation of electrochromic glass, a passive cooling labyrinth, and transpired solar collectors which will achieve an EUI (energy use intensity) of 25.4 kBtu/ft2/yr making Docking one of the most energy-efficient government office centers in the nation.
