Cats’ Cupboard
Kansas State University Foundation
Manhattan, Kansas
Food insecurity is a growing concern on college and university campuses. Insufficient access to nutritious and affordable food can impact a student’s health, well-being, and ability to focus on their studies. Many campuses like Kansas State University are taking steps to address this need. PGAV was commissioned by the K-State Foundation to study the feasibility of renovating the former Evangelical Campus Ministry building for use as Cats’ Cupboard’s new home. The foundation used this information to secure a generous gift from a K-State graduate to fund the project.
PGAV was then commissioned to provide architectural and interior design services for the building renovation. The adaptive reuse of the existing building adjacent to the K-State campus provides a more visible location and improved parking for the pantry; expanded space for check-in / check-out, operations, storage, and engagement / educational programming; and an improved shopping experience for patrons. Garden beds at the front of the building tended by the food pantry provide fresh fruits and vegetables. A loading dock allows for large deliveries of donated food and supplies.
